How much storage space is needed to record videos using the TORSH Talent Mobile App?
The amount of Recording Time you have available in the TORSH Talent mobile app is linked directly to the amount of storage space available on your immediate device. The TORSH Talent mobile app does not operate off of cloud storage availability.
As a precaution, we generally recommend having at least 3 hours of Recording Time Available or more before recording your video sessions. Any less, and you may not have enough storage space on your device to provision the video file, and your recording session may be lost altogether.
The TORSH Talent mobile app provides a general estimate of how much available time is left to record with via 'Recording Time Available.'
You can find your Recording Time Available by going to your Camera page on the mobile app and looking at the 'Recording Time Available' at the bottom of the screen. This metric typically calculates 5.5MB of data per minute of video recorded. This is a very general estimate, however, and we still recommend checking your device’s storage settings to determine the available space left on your device.
Understanding Storage Space in the TORSH Talent Mobile App
Most video files are very large in size, so they tend to take up a lot of storage space. On top of this, upload processes can be nuanced and rather complex. For instance:
- Recording a video in the TORSH Talent mobile app versus importing a video to the mobile app can have varying storage space requirements.
- Additionally, each mobile device records at different settings. Some video sessions may record for the same length of time as others but end up with a video that has a completely different file size.
- Lastly, the Upload process within the mobile app also requires further, temporary storage space depending on the video file size.
When a video is recorded within the TORSH Talent mobile app:
- A file copy is created and stored within the app on your immediate device, taking up storage space.
- That file copy is then compressed into a much smaller version that replaces the original, full-sized copy, in order to take up less space on your device.
- If you then upload the video file from the mobile app to the website, further storage space is taken up (albeit temporarily). In order for a file to upload to our website, another temporary copy of the recording is created in the background and sent to our processing servers. This upload process takes up further storage space (but only while the process takes place).
- For reference: A 1 hour video recording session done from the TORSH Talent mobile app can typically amount to anywhere between 300MB to 1GB in size. That one file then creates a second file that replaces it. Then a third file is created temporarily and sent to our servers in the upload process.
- In summary, while you are left with only (1) file afterwards on your immediate device, you still require at least 3 times that amount just to have the video compress and upload properly.
When a video is recorded outside the TORSH Talent mobile app:
- A file copy is created and stored in your Photos/Gallery app on your immediate device, taking up storage space.
- For reference: Due to most default phone/tablet settings, a video file recorded with your default Camera app is often very large, with a 1 hour video session sometimes being up to 5GB (or 5000MB) in size.
- If you then import the video file from your Photos/Gallery app to the TORSH Talent mobile app, you are then creating yet another video copy of the same exact size as the original but within the mobile app now.
- If you then upload that video file from the mobile app to the website, further storage space is taken up (albeit temporarily). In order for a file to upload to our website, another temporary copy of the recording is created in the background and sent to our processing servers. This upload process takes up further storage space (but only while the process takes place).
- In summary, you are then left with (2) large video files - one inside the mobile app and one inside your Photos/Gallery app on your immediate device. At least a third full size copy is temporarily needed for the upload process.
For these reasons, we recommend using the TORSH Talent mobile app to record video sessions, as you will be left with far less storage space taken up in comparison to recording via your default Camera app.
Managing Your Recording Time Available
Depending on your device, you may not be able to use all remaining data for recording with the TORSH Talent mobile app. If you are close to full capacity on your device, and your Recording Time Available is below 1 hour 30 minutes, you may experience crashing within the mobile app, as space is required in order for its uploading capability to operate.
